Management Reporter 2012 - Pointing to 2 Instances of SQL

Hi All -

This may be a very simplistic question, but as we have not tried it before, I figured I would reach out. We have a client that has 2 instances of SQL. Both instances of SQL sit on the same server. One hosts their production GP environment and one hosts their test GP environment. They have MR2012 RU5 currently installed that is using a GP Legacy connection. The MR2012 Server instance is installed on the SQL server which houses the 2 GP environments. The production GP environment companies have been imported into MR2012.

The client now wants to use MR2012 with their test GP environment as well. This is where I get into hypotheticals. Here are my questions:

  • What is the best practice to accomplish this?
  • Can I create a second connection (Legacy or DataMart) to the test instance of SQL?
  • Can I install a second instance of MR2012 Server on the same SQL server and point it to the test instance of SQL?
  • How do I handle the MR2012 client installs as they all currently point to http://<servername>:4712? (we want the users to be able to point to both)
    • If I go the second instance of MR2012 route, do I have to declare a different port number?
    • What would the MR2012 client URL look like? http://<server name>\<SQL instance>:<port #> ???

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated as this is foreign territory to us.

Cheers,

James.

We just changed the Connection information within Report Designer via Tools > Connection to point to a different server for our live and test systems. However this worked because the SQL Servers were different names.

We couldn't get it working where it was another instance of SQL on the same SQL Server.

I suspect port numbers might come into play here, but we couldn't figure out how that would work.

Microsoft Support provided the answer. Since our databases had the same IDs in both SQL instances, we needed to install a separate instance of MR2010 Server on a separate server. After this we could use the connection switching technique described by Olly Laos above. The port number could remain 4712 as the instance of MR2012 was on a different server where that port had not been taken as of yet.

    Cheers,

    James.

    Good day

Can you please advise how i specify a SQL named instance when installing Management Reporter Client.

I have it as http:SVR098\GPPROD:4712 and i am getting an error. The error reads as follows:

The format of the server address is not valid. Enter the address in the format http://servername:port

    I have installed MR2012 CU16 version 2.12.16003.25.

I have installed the server with no problems and configured it successfully.

    Thank you for your help.

    Regards

    Hi Patience -

In the server field you are defining where the Management Reporter services (and Configuration Console) reside...not the SQL instance. As such, the format would be (assuming the default port of 4712):

    http://<MRservicesServer>: 4712

If you need any further assistance please let me know.

    Cheers,

    James.

    Hi Patience -

    You are most welcome.

Do you mind marking my response so that users see that the answer worked?

    Cheers,

    James.
