I'd like to update a record by changing the owner field and assigning the record to another user. Is this possible with javascript? Is it the same as setting a look up value as per this link?

I've tried to follow it, but i still can't update the record's owner. Can anybody help me? Thanks in advance.

Assigning a record is not the same operation as an update.

You need to use the SOAP endpoint for this.

yes you can do it with java script but you must use the soap call to do the same.
