Setting System / Module Parameters using Script / Class / Job

What is the preferred way of keeping track of specific parameters in the settings section of each module? We're in the middle of an implementation, and I'm curious if there is a good way to:

  1. Keep track of specific settings in a source controllable file
  2. Deploy those settings automatically when a new dynamics ax 2012 installation occurs.

I'd rather not use the Data Export function of AX since that doesn't necessarilly contain exactly what we specified, just a state of the system at whenever the snapshot is taken, so it feels more brittle than a script that specifically sets parameters.

Any thoughts? Examples of how this is normally done. The ultimate goal is to ease automated deployment of environments as well as auditing what's in said envrionments without relying on SQL Database restores to reach a state.
