Moving GP install to new server

I need to migrate GP 2010 to a new server. However, we have a lot of customizations which need to be migrated over as well. I am hoping to copy the existing install of GP 2010 on existing server to new server, which will have all the customizations.

I am a newbie diving into GP 2010. I would greatly appreciate if someone could share some information with me regarding my issue.

Thanks.

Asif

    Hi,

Creating the .package files will take the VBA modifications with them. You might still have problems with any references within the .VBA files. I mean file references not 'references' in the VBA world.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

WOW...Yes it does have quite a few items with VBA code.

If you look at the Customization Maintenance window (Tools >> Customize >> Customization Maintenance) you'll be able to tell if any of your customizations have VBA code with them.

I don't think it has any VBA code attached to customizations, but I am not 100% sure. It was customized way before me and no one seems to know now.

I think export/import would be the best way to go as well. I am going to start with this option and see how it goes.

    I really appreciate your help.

    Thanks.

You have a couple of choices:

    1. You could copy the customized *.DIC files from the existing server to an identical location on the new server
    2. You could export all the customizations into an *.package file and then import them into the new installation on the new server.

I've done this both ways and exporting/importing is much easier.   When you import the *.package file is will create the appropriate *.DIC files in the correct version of the software.

Do any of your custtomizations have VBA code attached with them?

Yes, I have installed GP2010 on the new server. Now I am at the point of coping/moving the customization directories to new server. I guess my fear is that a lot of different reports are generated and even FRx is connected to SQL server.

I suppose I should start coping the folders and start with that. Would this be the appropriate way to start?

    Hi Avirk -

Just copying the GP2010 installation folder to a new server won't actually "install" Dynamics GP.   You'll need to install your current version of GP on the new server, then you should be able to move the customization dictionaries to the new server.   The paths to the customizations is stored in the Dynamics.set file so be sure to consider "where" the customization dictionaries will reside on the new server and update the .SET file accordingly after migrating the customizations to the new server.
