    HI Dhanoop,

Can you please explain the business scenario. There are ways AX calculates cubic meter and weights for consignment while shipping using TMS by setting up physical dimensions on product on manage inventory tab.

It would be helpful to know your actual requirement to determine available options.

    Hi Sagar,

Thanks for your reply. Let me tell you in detail what I am looking for.

I am using the version AX2012 R2. We are into the business of import and retail. We are keeping our items in our own warehouse and having trucks for the delivery. Delivery is doing by another legal entity in the same group and retail shops are coming under another legal entities. So there will be 3 legal entities are taking part int he whole operations.

Since delivery is doing by another legal entity, we are raising inter company sales orders for the same. I would like to calculate CBM of the items which are delivered and weight of the items too. CBM would help to find out the total space for all the items which are delivering and weight will help to find out the total weight of the trip.

Hope you understood our business scenario. Please suggest a method if you know how to do the same.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dhanoop R.Warrier

    Hi Dhanoop,

Thanks! for explaining the business scenario.

So what I have understood is that you need that system should calculate the total volume and total weight of the shipment which can be used by business users.

Well this can be achieved in standard AX by setting up items with weight and proper dimensions in physical dimensions form.

    Kindly follow the steps

1- Go to the item for which you want to setup weights and volume calculations. Navigate to manage inventory > physical dimensions.

2- Here setup default weight and physical dimensions such as width, depth and height for a particular unit of item. As you will add these values system will calculate the volume accordingly.

For e.g. an item which is sold in unit pcs we will setup like

Item        Unit     weight      Width     depth     height     volume(Calculated automatically)

    Item A    Pcs        110 kg        7               7            7           343

    Item A    Box        440 kg       11             11         11          1331

(NOTE - By default in AX the weight unit is kg, length is cm and volume cm3)

3- Now as you have setup physical dimensions for item in units your business operate system will calculate the total weight and total volume while you either buying or selling the said item.

4-  So now when we buy 110 pcs on a purchase order and we use load planning workbench system will calculate the total weight and volume for 110 quantity which will help transportation clerk to negotiate freight with shipping carriers.

so for this PO system will calculate total weight as 12100 kg and total volume as 37730 cm3

5- Same holds good for sales order. When you release it to warehouse you get totals in shipment and load planning workbench.

    Hi Sagar,

Thank you very much for the detailed answer.

Let me ask you some doubts for the same.

Do we need to enable "Pallet id" in storage dimension group before inputting the depth, width and height? I have even tried by enabling and without enabling but for me the volume is not calculating automatically. Seems like we have to feed it manually.

And how the volume and weight are going to be displayed in Packing Slip? We have to redesign it?

    Thanks,

    Dhanoop R.Warrier

    Hi Dhanoop,

No pallet id has got nothing to do with volume calculations. The depth, width and height are physical dimensions of the product itself and not for any packing material or pallet.

I think you are entering the dimensions on manage inventory fast tab and there AX does not calculate volume on its own. These dimensions were used for legacy warehouse module and not for the new WMS.

For the new WMS you need to enter physical dimensions on header manage inventory warehouse tab. AX takes dimensions for shipment and load from here.

With respect to printing the weight and volume on packing slip I would say yes as most business have a customized packing slip. So factor in printing weight and volume on packing slip by minor change.

    Hi Sagar,

Sorry couldn't answer to you yesterday. Actually, I was trying to redesign the packing slip. But it is not yet done. I hope it is not that much complicated, isn't it?

In between, I would like to find out from you whether I am doing correct or not. Please find the place where I am inputting the values. You may please correct me if I am wrong. In my case, you can see that volume is not calculating its own and that field is editable. It means we have to input the value, am I right?

Please note that I am using AX2012 R2. Not sure may be thats why, it is not calculating its own.

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Dhanoop,

Packing slip design depends upon business requirement and can vary slightly from business to business.

Generally packing slip is a document that provides information such as delivery address, shipper, container with dimensions and weights, total quantity, item name, customer, total weight, gross weight and so on.

So depending upon what business wants to be provided to end customer makes stage for packing slip design.

With respect to place kindly find the attached screenshot for the same. This is the place where you should enter your weight and dimensions. If you enter dimensions here volume is calculated automatically. This is in AX 2012 R3 CU 12.

Thank you very much Sagar for your help.

Finally, let me ask is it going to work even if I configure the weight and volume under fast tabs? I am using AX2012R2 so there is no other option to put.

    Thanks,

    Dhanoop R.Warrier

    Hi Dhanoop,

Yes it will work even if you enter the weights and dimensions in the fast tab also. The only difference is that in the fast tab you enter dimensions for the inventory unit only. In above case pcs.

In cases if you want to add other dimensions for other units you need to go to action pane physical dimension tab.

For e.g If we want to setup 1 box for the same item we need to setup at physical dimensions tab

Unit    Weight     Depth    width   height    volume

    box     1100           70          70        70        343000

    Hello Sagar,

    I have a related question.

So consider the Item Physical Dimension per pcs is in MM.

However, while creating Load the Load Template has dimension in say Foot or Meter.

How do we manage this conversion ? As setting the Container dimension in MM would be very lengthy Volume figure.

    Any suggestion
