Item Lookup Code - best practices

Hi, I'm new to RMS and I'm setting up a new store. The store is a retail clothing store and the items we sell do not have a barcode when we receive them. We're planning to print our own labels for each item. What is best way to create/generate item lookup codes. Does RMS have a "next item code" option? I couldn't find one. We can come up with our own numbers, but once we have a lot of items how do we know what the next code is.

Just looking for some direction on this. All help is greatly appreciated.

 Thanks.

Thanks for the information. We went with a similar scheme.

FYI: Use the item wizard whenever you add an item, its the easiest and fastest way.

We create a two letter abbreviation for each of our supplies. For example, if we are receiving products from a company named Molock, we would name it MO, MC, etc.

For item look-up codes, we add the style number after the supplier. So if we order part number AJ292KD from Molock, we would create our item look-up code to be MOAJ292KD.

If this specific item look-up (AJ292KD) has variations, we create it to be a matrix item, which then Microsoft RMS to automatically assign unique look-up codes to the variations. For example, if part number AJ292KD comes in blue and white and you configure this as a matrix Item, RMS may assign unique look-up codes to be AJ292KD0101 and AJ292KD0201.
