Workflows - setup a secondary action

Hi,

I'm a newbie at Dynamics CRM 2011. I've been asked to set up a Case workflow that triggers a number of actions on creation and then updates the case priority if its not resolved after 3 days.  I have created a workflow which triggers the following actions when a Case with a specific Case Type is created:

  1. The Case is assigned to a specific person
  2. The Follow date is set for 3 days ahead
  3. A task is created and assigned to a specific person

This all works fine... what I can't work out is how to update the Case Status to High if the case is not resolved after 3 days.  I have tried various combinations but don't seem to be able to identify the trigger. I am also very confused with setting date parameters.

I wondered if I should be doing a Wait condition... but I can't work out what date fields to use to set up the logic (there doesn't seem to be a Today option).

Is anyone able to tell me how to do this? Alternatively, can anyone tell me what I need to read or terminology I should search on to work it out for myself.

Many thanks

Fellow MVP Richard Knudson is the master of workflows. His blog and book are must reads for all CRM system admins involved in configuraing and managing workflows:

His post on CRM 4.0 workflow timeouts still applies to CRM 2011 and will help with your requirement: www.dynamicscrmtrickbag.com/.../crm-4-workflow-timeouts-how-to

Thank you for the help, this has definitely moved me a step closer to working it out and Richard Knudson's post is very helpful.

I haven't yet managed to get it working though.  I am going to try a few more things before asking another question.

Hi, this is an update to my original question.

My objective is to update the Priority on a Case to High using a workflow. So far I haven't been able to get the workflow to work.

I watched Richard Knudson's post about the Wait and Timeout condition which was very helpful and as a result  I have added the following to my workflow:

Timeout until 4 days after Created on  then

         Check Case Status = Active

If Case Status = Active then

              Update Priority field to High

I have not set a workflow complete condition.

When I run the workflow, the first three actions (summarised below) all work:

         Assigned to a specific person

Set Follow up date is set for 3 days ahead

Created and assign a task to a specific person

But the Wait/Timeout condition does not.

When I test the workflow on an individual case, the Workflow Progress Status Reason is Waiting. On the 4th day after Creation, the Workflow progress is showing 'Succeeded"... but the Priority is still saying Normal.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

    Thanks

    Sarah
