Dynamics CRM 2016 On-Premise Update 0.1 For SP1 (KB3203310) and/or Dec 2016 Update 2 (KB3154952)

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We are running Dynamics CRM 2016 version 8.1.0.359.

We have some issues (Add attachments is not available after saving a new email message in CRM while using Legacy Form Rendering. The Contract Cancellation Date field is set to current day instead of the selected date on cancel.) which are sorted in Update 0.1 for SP1 (KB3203310) which is due for release in Q2 2017 (support.microsoft.com/.../update-0.1-for-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2016-service-pack-1) and is shown as build 8.1.1.0961.

However WSUS is offering us Dec 2016 Update 2 for SP2 (KB3154952) which is shown as build 8.2.0000.0749.

I would guess that Dec 2016 Update 2 does not contain the fixes we require but if we install it and move to build 8.2.0000.0749 will we be able to install the Update with the fixes we require which seems to be a lower build number 8.1.1.0961?

Or is the build number on Update 0.1 wrong and it is actually a later build number?

Well, it depends on your needs.

    It is standard versioning practice

They have an SP1 version, which is CRM 2016 and which seems to get updates

They have an SP2 version, which is Dynamics 365, which will also get updates

It's your choice if you want to install SP2 (and probably don't have your issue fixed), or if you want to stay on SP1, install update 0.1 once it's available, and have your issue fixed, and then wait for Update 0.1 for SP2 which might have a fix for your issue, too.

No one says "don't install KB3154952".

The case opening is that Microsoft may be able to tell you if your issue is fixed in SP2 as well. This is not something anyone from outside Microsoft will be able to tell you unfortunately (unless of course the issue is listed as fixed in the release notes, which I take it isn't, else you wouldn't ask the question :) )

So in WSUS we have CRM 2016 updates enabled, the update KB3154952 is offered and in the MS blurb which Windows Update offers (support.microsoft.com/.../december-2016-update-for-dynamics-365-online-and-on-premises) says it changes the name from CRM 2016 to Dynamics 365 - but the unreleased update KB3203310 says it is for CRM 2016.  Where is the information that says do or do not install KB3154952?

Because as far as I can tell from the many questions online about it Dynamics 365 (on-premise) is the latest CRM 2016 (on-premise) but with updated licensing for the individual components rather than CRM as a whole?

And please don't say raise a case with MS as unless we pay £199 to get an answer to a query relating to contradicting build numbers it seems MS make sure no-one can help you and it is extremely unreasonable to expect customers to pay £199 for a simple query like that.

The updates are for different versions.

There might be an update coming in SP2 which will fix your issue in the future. I would open a case with Microsoft for this.

Thanks for the reply, if you read my question you will notice that I am fully aware the update hasn't been released, my query is to do with the build numbers as the available Update 2 for SP2 is build 8.2.0.749 while the update which fixes the issues we have is Update 0.1 for SP1 build 8.1.1.961 - my question is whether we should install the available update (8.2) or wait until the new update is released which seemingly has a much earlier build number (8.1)??

While a KB article for the update has been published for some time now, the actual Update has NOT. We are also waiting on the binaries to be distributed...  see my thread here:
