Sharing Contact among multiple Vendors/Customers

This seems like an easy enough question to answer, is there any way in AX to relate a contact to multiple customers/vendors? It seems like a contact is tightly coupled to whatever other dirparty specified during its creation, which seems an odd design choice because it forces duplicate data.

How does one normally handle the scenario:

Customer 1 Chain A

Customer 2 Chain A

Contact 1 is Contact for Chain A, so in theory should be connected to both Customer 1 and 2.

Currently the user is forced to either:

Make 2 Contacts, connect them to each respective customer.

Make 2 Logisticslocation 'Quick Contacts', one for each respective customer. This is even worse since it isn't even a real contact record at this point, just an email/phone/fax attached to a customer/vendor.

Surely there is a better way to handle this I haven't thought of?

    Hi Nicholas,

You can add relationships when you open the global address book. You can eventually add a new relation type which will prevent the error "A Contact relationship can only be created by creating a contact.".

The disadvantage is that you can only see these relationships in the global address book. When you try to open the contacts from e.g. the customer, the persons of this contact type are not visible.

This is written with the view on standard AX. I also would like to add one person to multiple organizations as contact.

I would like this ability, too.  Any guesses as to why AX was set up this way?

Looking for same functionality.. Relationship works but what if I want to use that contact to send an invoice or  ship an order?

    Hi all,

You can add feedback on Microsoft Connect to have it monitored by Microsoft product team.

RE: Sharing Contact among multiple Vendors/Customers

It was created as a 1:1 relationship due to industry feedback and the CRM product manager saw no need to have a single contact to multiple business relations. This was the discussion had back in AX2009 and I am pretty sure I had my connect suggestion rejected because there was no deemed business need. I quoted contractors, inspectors, government officials, agents, etc.

Due to the fact that I have done this before I had a look and the suggestion is there again. If you vote for it then it has more chance of getting in future releases - until then each time you need it you customize it. The suggestion is here: connect.microsoft.com/.../contact-assing-to-multiple-customers
