Account to Contact address relationship

Hello again everyone!

I'm still relatively new to CRM administration, and I have a quick question regarding the Account and Contact entities.

Some of our customers change addresses every so often.  When this happens, we update the address on the Account page.  How would I go about having CRM automatically update the address of the Contacts associated with the Account as well?

I guess an easier way of putting it would be; How do I create a 1:1 relationship between the address of the Account and any Contacts tied to the Account?

    Hi Pete,

In that case you need to write the plugin on update of account and write the logic in your plugin that first fetch the related contacts of that account and update the updated address field of account on the related conatct. refer the SDK to write the plugins

you can find the sample plugins in the SDK  in the below refeence path SDK\SampleCode\CS\Plug-ins

Writing a plugin is the only method of creating that relationship?

You can do that by javascript as well, but the recommended is the plugin option

Unfortunately, a custom plugin or javascript does not help, unless there is already one that has been created floating around.

Thank you for your suggestions Mohit

So it looks like I'll need to create a Workflow to accomplish this.  I'm assuming it will need to be an On Demand process?

What would a Workflow process designed to Copy the Account's address fields over to the Contact's address fields look like?

Hi Pete, thanks for reaching out.

The custom plugin would do this or javascript. If custom code is not an option you would then need to revisit the original business need for this request. What is the true need for all contacts related to an account to have the same address?

    • If you are doing bulk mail you could change that process to pull Address information from the parent account.
    • If you need all users to see the correct business address you could change the contact form to display a quick view form of the account address.

So let me know more about the original need and we can help come up with a solution. FYI you could use a workflow to update the Primary Contact's address, but not ALL contacts related to that account.

Eager to help. Have a great day!

    Hi Pete,

We had this situation and we have used the distributed workflow activity that will address the 1:N relationship updates.   This worked well for us!

    crm2011distributewf.codeplex.com

It says 2011 but we used with 2015 instance and it works great.  There is even a PowerPoint that walks through how to use.

    Thanks much,

Tom-  I had never thought to use a quick view form, this fits our business needs perfectly.  Thanks a lot for the indepth reply

Drew- This will be PERFECT for future use.  We don't use many workflows currently, but I'll definitely be bookmarking this for later.  Thanks again!
