currently i am on CRM 2011, my active directory is 2008/2012, looking forward to upgrade that to 2016
want to make sure CRM 2011 would still work fine with that

Based on the following document, AD 2016 is not supported with CRM 2011, but have not tested it,

Are you using ADFS with 2011 or not. Your question is saying AD DS?
No it is not compatible with ADFS 2016. The first version of CRM that is compatible with ADFS 2016 is Dynamics 365. The compatibility list for 2011 is available at support.microsoft.com/.../compatibility-with-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2011. Since this list does not explicitly state that ADFS 2016 is not compatible, I will include the link for CRM 2016 which shows that the first version of CRM that has ADFS 2016 compatibility is Dynamics 365. support.microsoft.com/.../compatibility-with-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2016
