Hi All,

1. What is the difference between Application version and kernel version?

2. We know that almost both versions are same but some times Application version and kernel version is different . If it's different then what is the impact in application level?

Can you please more shed on this.

Thanks!

RE: Kernel version and Application version in AX 2012

The Dynamics AX Kernel is the component executing the X++ Application code. So the Kernel version is the version of the executable (Client, Server, Business Connectors) while the Application version is the version of the Dynamics AX “Business Logic” - the X++ Application code, Forms, Repots – everything in the AOT.

You can check the current Application version in the Dynamics AX Client going to "Help - About Microsoft Dynamics AX."

    Thanks a lot Bruce,

So, it's showing 3 different Kernel versions for each Client, Server and Business connector ?

    Thanks!

On top of the above, the kernel version between the server and client-side executables must always match, since the communication protocol between versions could change.

Application version just shows your major and minor version of the business logic, including patch level.

    Thanks Vilmos,

You said that Kernel version for Server and Client must always match but kernel version for Business connector would be change.

*** If suppose Kernel version for Server and Client side is not matched then
    How to resolve ?
What is the reason of not match of Kernel version for Server and Client side ?
What is the impact in application level happened in case of not matched of Kernel version for Server and Client side ?

Can you please more shed on this.

    Thanks!

RE: Kernel version and Application version

There is a good FAQ resource:

FAQ: Microsoft Dynamics AX Kernel Hotfixes

Correct me if I am wrong, but question number 9 has some comments regarding your question:

Q9: Is it supported to have different kernel builds for different AX components in the same environment?

NO it is NOT supported. Customers should always apply the kernel fix to every AX component in the same environment.

It’s possible that unexpected behaviour could result from a kernel mismatch. In the latest versions of AX, the AOS throws a warning message to the event logs (event 151) if a client tries to connect to it and has a different kernel version.

RE: Kernel version and Application version

The reason for a not matched kernel is due to bad system administrators or poorly designed system infrastructure :)

Having different versions will result in unexpected behavior, or application crash.
