Dynamic 365 tenant migration for new business acquisition

We need to migrate a Dynamics 365 environment to another tenant (acquired new company). Available documentation shows that a service request must be created for this. However, I cannot find what exactly will happen during the migration and what actions we have to perform in preparation for, during and after the migration.

Can you provide me with information/details regarding such a migration (a migration plan for example).

It is also not clear whether there is a fallback option in case the migration should fail.
