Composite barcode scanning

We are using BC initially as an inventory/warehouse management solution. Some of our items use composite 2D barcodes which contain both lot and serial numbers, sometimes exp date as well. How can we enable/configure composite scanning? I have regexp prepared to extract the individual numbers from the string that the codes resolve to, just don't know where to set this up. I've googled around and found mentions of "barcode symbology setup" but have not found this anywhere in the BC frontend. Any help? Thank you!

There is no symbology setup in Business Central. To simplify it, the barcode scanner simply works as an input device that converts the barcode into a text string. For example, if you put the cursor in the item no. field you can scan a barcode that contains an item number. You can do the same thing for a serial number or lot number fields. But its scanning 1 field at a time.

For each item you can also setup Item References. Perhaps this can work for you if you setup your barcodes in here and use the item reference no. field when scanning the barcodes on documents/journals. More info - Use Item References - Business Central | Microsoft Learn

this is not possible using out of box BC, you need to use a 3rd party extension to handle the barcode scanning that contains combines information.

then in that app, you'll be able to setup barcode rules or symbology to read your barcode.
