What causes upgrades from GP 2015 14.00.0661 to fail

I did an upgrade from GP 2015 14.00.0661 this weekend which initially failed with the message below. I was able to proceed using this upgrade path

14.00.0661 -> 14.00.1230 -> 16.00.0814-> 18.4.1461

It appears to have something to do with wkPostingValidationState. What exactly causes the failure?

    I had a case with this error last year, same object and DBMS: 12.

    The ‘wkPostingValidationState’ appears to be a company database table, which looks like it has been around since at least GP 2010 if not before.

    In the one case I had, it was failing at db_status of 17 (DB_Upgrade) so nothing was written into the DU000030/failed tables script.

    We restarted the upgrade and it went through past this error and continued on till the database finished.

    Another case I had with this error was due to connectivity between GP and SQL which, if you were also able to continue the upgrade and it completed, it may have just been a moment where GP and SQL stopped communicating, as Utilities would normally continue to fail if it was a hard error.
