How to maintain different cost for same item based on Order type in Dynamics 365

Dear All,

Is there any way to maintain different Item cost for same item based on Order type Inventory Order and Direct Order.( not direct delivery)

Stock Order we are using Weighted Avg Cost. For direct order no need to maintain the item cost or no need to merge wit inventory cost.

We tried below

1. Sales Order to PO Linking ( marking)

2. Different site

But for all cases Cost is merging after PO post. I want to keep different cost for same item

    Hi Sunil,

Do you use standard costing or any other costing method?

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hello Ludwig,

    Thanks for your response.

We are using weighted average costing for inventory. Under storage dimension group we hqave enabled Site level financial cost .We have 5 warehouse attached with 5 business unit under one legal entity with common price for 4 warehouses and other need to be maintain different price to handle case to case order.

    Hi Sunil,

Order type based costing (Inventory Order vs. Direct Order) is as far as I know not supported out of the box.

Can you possibly separate those items and their handling by site or warehouse?

If this is the case then it should be possible.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

The cost that appears after PO posting is only a temporary cost. The real cost of an order is set by Inventory close, after both the PO and the SO have been invoiced. This is where Inventory marking can help you; it will cause Inventory close to ignore the normal rules of Weighted average cost, and set the cost of the SO to match the cost of the PO which is marked to it.

I am confused about how you want this to work.

Are you looking to hold the same item with the stock separately identified and stored with two different costs? (you could do that by using item variants)

Or to dynamically change the cost based on the sales order? In which case how would each different cost be held and calculated and where would any revaluation get posted?

Which will be used for inventory valuation? What is our auditor's take on the policy?

If you are direct delivering then marking  and /or non stocked inventory will tie to the PO cost and be part of inventory cost.

If you create an extra virtual site then each site could have a different standard cost. One would hold zero stock and only be used for shipping a particular type of order. It would be replenished from the other Site where the stock is otherwise held. This would be a system transaction only - physically the stock need not move.

Another work around might be to have a virtual supplementary  service item to add the cost difference.

What if you have Warehouse set as Financial dimension (not just Site) in order to separate the "special direct order warehouse" cost price?

    Hi Ludwig,

We decided to configure two sites to manage the cost based on the order type .

Based on the order type site will be selected. For Inventory selling price we will use only one site.Other will be restricted from the selling price calculations.

    Good Morning Sunil,

Is that the final decision/solution that you have implemented?

If so and if there are no other questions open, please mark your solution as verified because other community users might come up with similar questions.

Many thanks for your help and best regards,
