Excel Report Builder Security

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by

HI,

I created an excel report in excel report builder and when I try to publish the report, I get an error message that I do not have priveleges.  I went into security and setup a task for this.  I am currently a POWEUSER and should be able to access to everything.  Does anyone know if I am missing some security setup?

thanks,

Laura

I haven't actually done excel reports but I believe the concept is that it is using a "Datasource" to connect to the SQL server, which is sort of independent of your GP login, with the exception of sa which is a GP login as well as a server login.  Your GP username and password will not allow you to connect to the SQL server because using it in GP sends it through an encryption routine.

You can create a connection in excel 2007 (not 100% about excel 2003)  to the SQL server using data connections.  I think this is the concept of Excel Reports where you model the report and then it used this data connection to pull the most recent data right from SQL and arrange and sum the data as you have it designed in your excel file.

So the example is that I have a Data Connection in an excel file that pulls the latest Chart of Accounts every time I open the file.  Really simple, just one column "Account Number."  from the GL00105 Table.  That way I can do v-lookups on that column to see if an account that has been coded to already exists or needs to be created first before integrating a transaction.

But I have a special SQL login that has access to the server which I use.  It is independent of GP.  It just has "Select" access to the tables.  I think Excel Reports uses a similar concept of reading from GP tables.

    Thanks,

I signed in as sa and was able to publish, but the didn't have any data.  I think it has to do with the sql admin that you mentioned.  Giving up on it for now.

    Thanks again for your help

Either by signing in as user sa or DYNSA in GP or having yout administrator give you administrative rights

    Thanks,

but how do you get to view the report if you cannot publish it to Excel?

    Re: Excel Report Builder Security

    Hi Laura.

The security may be related to SQL and not GP.

Excel report builder builds views in SQL and you may require administrative rights in the database.

Typically anyone can create Excel Reports but an IT administrator publishes the report.

    Hope this helps.
