We have an old Great Plains Dynamics 6.00 using a Microsoft SQL 2000 on a Windows 2003 R2.
We are going to upgrade this to Dynamics 2010 or 2013 using a Microsoft SQL 2012 on a Windows 2012 server.
It is my understanding that throughout the GP versions between 6.00 and 2010/2013, there have been changes made to the database structure, so I wanted to know if there is a special path to take going from "point A to point Z" in this operation.
Thanks in advance for any comments on this.
Ole

Thank you Ian, that was the answer I was looking and hoping for.
I appreciate your explanation. :)
Thanks,
Ole
No - you won't need a licence key to install - but you won't be able to access anything other than system palettes until you enter reg keys. Assuming that all went well with the various upgrades - this should be OK...If you're not worried about checking data etc in versions 7,8, 9 and 10...then you don't need the keys for those versions.
When you are current on your enhancement you will be able to go all the way to GP 2010 - and you can enter the reg keys for this version then - and you will then have full access.
Also when you are current on enhancement - you could request keys for prior versions from MS if you wanted to be able to launch and examine say versionn 9 or 10.
Ian.
Follow up question:
We have been able to move our 6.0 database to a test server (SQL 2000 on Win 2003 R2) where we have managed to upgrade it first to 7.5 and then 8.0, as those were the two versions we had.
In order to get it to 2010, we would need either 9.0 or 10.0, both of which we will be able to download once we have become a 2010 registered customer.
We did NOT need a license key in order to install 7.5 and 8.0.
Will we need one to install 9.0 or 10.0?
Thanks,
Ole
Well I have been with GP since the old DOS days and then with Dynamics since day one. I am a pack rat and never get rid of anything. If you are still on maintenance you can log into CustomerSource. If you do not know your credentials you can cannot sales operations at 1-800-456-0025. If you are not on maintenance this will be very difficult. You can try calling sales operations and plead your case. Your partner may have droppped you from their client list and they will not be able to retrieve your license keys. At least Microsoft will have them and most likely require you to get onto maintenance.
Thanks Richard,
Yes, I looked for version 9.0, but could not download it unless I was either a GP customer or partner.
We still have not heard back from the MS assigned partner, and I've not heard back from the MS partner from Dell either, so I don't know what's up with that.
My question to them was how to get access to the needed upgrade versions when we buy version 2010.
We do have version 7.5, but we do not have an install key for it.
We do NOT have version 9.0 nor any install key.
I am pretty disappointed in the lack of response and knowledge from those 2 partners.
Thanks,
Ole
I believe I have install media going back to the first release of Dynamics plus service packs. You probably have a box or mailer somewhere in your office with all the old install media. If you get stuck let me know.
Ole,
Good question. I have always had keys for all the interim versions in an upgrade like this to make sure there were no issues. I am not sure if you can actually run through an upgrade without supplying valid keys - perhaps if anyone reading this knows for certain, they will chime in.
Are you current on your GP maintenance plan? If so, you should not need to buy a new version (it is part of your maintenance) and you should be able to log into CustomerSource and get your registration keys for the previous versions. If you are not current on maintenance then you may need to talk to your GP Partner (or possibly MS) about all of this to make sure you will be able to get everything that you will need for the upgrade.
Also, if you do not have the media for the older versions, you may not be able to simply download them, so you might need help from your partner with that, as well.
Thanks Victoria.
Would a MS Dynamics GP Partner be able to supply me with the versions (7.5 & 9.0) needed when we purchase version 2010 from them?
I believe I have one of both of them, but I assume a license key is needed to install them, unless they're "equipped" with a trial license period.
Victoria, what do you mean by "full" version? Your path above looks good, just check to see which service packs need to be applied to make each jump.
I believe there was a GP 7.5 that was actually considered a 'full' version. So you would not be able to go from 6.0 to 8.0. (Hopefully someone will correct me if this is not accurate) . In that case, you would go:
6.0 to 7.5
7.5 to 9.0
9.0 to 2010
2010 to 2013 if needed
