Dynamics 365 Goals: Can Agents See Their Manager’s Aggregated Parent Goal? Need Clarification

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to configure Goal Management in Dynamics 365 and I need some help understanding what’s actually possible.

Scenario

  • A manager creates a parent goal with a target of 10.

  • The manager creates two child goals for two agents (5 + 5), each with Parent Goal = Manager’s Goal.

  • Rollup is working correctly.

Expectation

  • The manager should see:

    • Their own parent goal

    • Their agents’ child goals

    • Proper rollup totals

  • The agent should see:

    • Their own child goal

    • Their manager’s aggregated (parent) goal, because it represents the overall team target

The Problem

I cannot find a way to build a view or a chart where an agent can see only:

  • Their own goal

  • Their manager’s parent/aggregated goal without seeing goals from other managers in the business unit.

I’ve tried:

  • System view filters (too limited, no Owner/Manager fields)

  • BU‑based filtering (shows everyone in the BU)

  • Parent Goal filtering only (still shows unrelated records)

  • Goal Owner = Current User (agent can’t see the manager goal)

  • Custom chart filters (still blocked by security restrictions)

My requirement is simple:

Agent should see the team’s aggregated target (manager goal) inside the Goals chart.
Manager should see only their team goals.
No visibility into other managers’ goals.

Any guidance or examples would be incredibly helpful.
P.S: Everything has to be done with OOTB feature only

Agents cannot see their manager’s parent goal unless the manager shares it with them. This is exactly how Microsoft designed it:
Child goal owner gets access only to their own goal.
Parent goal’s manager automatically gets access to child goals, not the other way around. So, the solution is very simple.
    • Manager opens their Parent Goal
    • Click Share
    • Add the Agent
    • Give Read permission
     the agent now sees both:
    • Their own child goal
    • The manager's parent goal
this is the only true OOTB method that works cleanly for manager to agent visibility.

there is another way Use a Team-Owned Goal (Alternative OOTB Method)
To avoid per‑user sharing, you can make the parent goal owned by a Team, and place agents inside that team. system allows goals to be owned by users or teams. Team members automatically inherit Read access to team-owned records.
there are some limitations as well with this :
    • Any member of that team sees everything the team owns
    • You cannot restrict visibility within the same team
    • Must carefully manage team membership
But this still gives a clean OOTB way to expose the parent goal without sharing per user.

    Thanks,
    Manoj

Thanks for the explanation that helps.

For more context on my scenario: I’m building a dashboard chart to show aggregated team performance (Goals) where the chart includes Target vs Actual values.

    Currently:

    • The Goal entity has PC BU security role with Read access.

    • Agents should only see the goal belonging to their own Team Manager.

    • However, in the dashboard/chart they are seeing goals from other managers as well.

So the issue is not accessing the parent goal, but restricting visibility so agents only see their manager’s goal, not all manager goals.

Do you know the best way to control this filtering/visibility so that:

    • Agents only see their own manager’s team goal

    • Other managers’ goals do not appear in the dashboard/chart?

    Thanks again for your help.
