Notes window, invalid position set in Dex.ini NoteWindow=

Posted on by 50

When GP 10 user clicks on a window Note button nothing appears to happen. When I look in the local Dex.ini the setting is NoteWindow= 32387,32266,104,253. Apparently the note is open in memory but you can't see or close it and there's no "note" shortcut on the taskbar either.

Has anyone seen a situation like this?

    GP Power Tools (previously Support Debugging Tool) can ensure that windows don't open outside the visible area of the desktop. The setting is on the Company tab of Administrator Settings.

    FYI: The weird settings for the Dex.ini setting occur when the main application window is minimised and the notes window is closed. I discovered this when developing the feature to stop windows from opening outside the desktop.

    Hello Juli,

    Did you ever find a fix for the notes window in GP?

    You can download the support debugging tool and associated documentation from PartnerSource. If you are a Customer, you will have to get it from your partner. There is no charge for the tool.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    The support debugging tool to the rescue

    - Dex.ini management.

    It starts on page 95 and it is fabulous!

    Kind regards,

    Re: Notes window, invalid position set in Dex.ini NoteWindow=

    We are experiencing the Same thing.  We open the DEX.ini File & plug-in the window Position coordinates:

    WindowPosX=1

    WindowPosY=1

    WindowWidth=1024

    WindowHeight=768

    But when another TS Remote User Logs in, it changes the settings to

    WindowPosX=-1604              (That's a NEGATIVE 1604)

    WindowPosY=1

    WindowWidth=1036

    WindowHeight=756

    We have to go in & re-set the DEX.ini file about 7 or 8 times before it 'sticks'...

    QUESTION:  Is there a way to do something like...

    "ABSOLUTE WINDOW POSITION="  in the DEX.ini file??

    Re: Notes window, invalid position set in Dex.ini NoteWindow=

    Leslie,

    Thank you. Your suggestions helps when the note window is still in the frame. FYI, my system is on Terminal Server (sorry I left that out). In a TS deployment I find the entire idea of Dex.ini logging

    each successive user's GP note window size and position a bit problematic. I'm sure there's a good reason it's designed that way, but it does kind of ask for display issues when there are numerous monitor sizes logging in.

    Apart from that my enviornment has the situation, intermittantly (so far unexplained) where the dex.ini gets notewindow= gets a wild setting like 32387,32266,104,253.

    If you have an idea what might drive this strange behavior I'd like to hear.

    Again thanks for the help

    James

    James,

    I have seen this when multiple monitors were used the last time the notes window was moved (and hence the .ini file modified) and when a projecter was used. It's easy to fix,

    1. modify the .ini setting

    2. use tile/cascade windows (right click on taskbar) to get it in view and then move it

    3. alt + tab until you have the window selected, right click on the task bar and select Move, when you get the Move cursor hit any of the arrow keys on your keyboard and move the mouse the window will come into view

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
