I have created a Business Rule to set the Default Value of a currency field to zero and it simply does not do what it is supposed to? The field stays blank.

Can you please provide a screenshot of your Business Rule?
Actually I realized my error. In choosing 'Set Default Value' I was expecting it to update existing records, whereas I should've been using "Set Field Value" for existing records. 'Set Default Value' only fires on newly created records.
