Windows Create Error (740)

Posted on by 890

We have a custom exe on the SL 7 Menu. It launches from some machines but mostly not.
When I try to launch ON MY OWN Laptop I get Windows CreateProcess () error 740 .

  • The exe is in the correct folder (browsed to it from menu
  • Can launch the exe it is used all the time from a desktop shortcut
  • UAC setting is set to Never Notify
  • This happens on Windows 7, the server and Windows 8.1
  • I have Full Control permissions on the folder and exe
  • The error message lists the exe as PFSPRDO.exe 1 - the actual exe does not have the numeral 1 behind the exe.

This almost sounds like how the file is being accessed.  And perhaps you've already visited this but just in case... In Menu Maintenance for the exe, did you use the UNC or full path?  I recall having an issue like this but can't recall if I ended up using UNC.

    Hi Walt,

    I appreciate any input!

I have done some more testing.

We have the same custom exe that displays SL data in spreadsheet format and allows one to enter additional data saved to custom tables.

The exe is used under different names for different purposes in the same menu

There is only one application folder on the server.

When I access SL from the terminal server one of the menu items open. The other do not

When I access SL directly on the server ALL the menu items open.

It was worth a shot.  One last question, can you launch the exe direct from the folder where it is stored without any problems?

Hi Walt, thank you for responding.

The client install is on a server so all users are accessing one set of exe's.

I get the same problem on my own laptop.

I can only speak from my experience, and I just had this issue with another install in SL.  Turns out the .exe file was not in the proper folder.  Are you running SL from a terminal server solution, or as an install on individual machines?  The .exe file my be installed correctly on some machines but not all.  Just a thought.
