Reliable printing of large reports through the Web client

We recently upgraded from GP 2016 to GP 2016 and made the big decision to transition out entire user base (except for a very small handful) from the thick client to the web client.

The biggest issue we've run into is the printing of reports. We have users that frequently perform actions that trigger the printing of 4 or 5 reports at once, and we have check runs that are routinely 200+ pages.

I've had them try IE, Edge, Firefox, and Chrome (as well as alternate print drivers, different printers, printing to file, and printing to screen) and I just can't get the web client to handle any of these really large prints reliably.

Has anybody else faced this?

As I mentioned before, under web client, you should simply be able to run the report, choosing template as the report type, and the template generator should automatically create one for reports that don't have one in place.

If my responses proved to be the answer to your questions, I would highly appreciate your mark them as such.

Can't thank you enough. I can now make templates for reports and see light at the end of the tunnel. The trouble is that we apparently don't have template reports in place for anything. Not even for totally unmodified canned reports, and there are a huge number of reports that get used on the property.

Is there a way to do the template report generation in bulk? The closest I've found would be to run every report that exists, export each to .xml, use TemplateGenerator.exe with each of them, and then manually add the results through Template Maintenance, but that would take me a week if I worked on nothing else.

    Stephen,

I wrote extensively about this issue here: dynamicsgpblogster.blogspot.com/.../word-templates-printing-to-html.html

Here's one more that google is failing me on (and thank you VERY much so far). I've turned the template reports back on in our lab environment, and I can pull them and choose them as an output, but something weird is happening.

Instead of saving them as reportname.docx, it's saving them as reportname.docx.htm

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Technically speaking, the web client should auto-generate a template report form those Dexterity reports that do not have one when a template is requested. If you already have a template report created, try to remove it from the Template Configuration window and see if that helps.

  • RE: Reliable printing of large reports through the Web client

I was afraid you'd say that. After we upgraded from 2010 to 2016, we found that many of the template reports generated errors, and when I talked to the company that assisted us with the upgrade about it, their response was to ask if we traditionally used the template reports, and when we said no (since we were previously doing everything with the thick client in GP 2010 and using the 'standard' reports only) to they had us completely disable template reports.

My apologies. If you click on the Report Type drop-down, it should allow to print either a Standard or Template report. Template will generate a Word file.

The behavior you describe seems atypical. I would suggest you open a Microsoft Support case and have them follow up on this particular issue. I have not seen a situation where multiple reports causes only a portion of one report or another to print. Please open the support case and reference them to this exchange by copying the thread address.

I'm a little confused on your answer. Our web client doesn't have any option to output reports as Word files. If it did, it would save us a lot of headache. (I'm starting to fear that the consulting company that helped us deploy GP and the web client was even less familiar with the web client than they claimed, and they were up front that very few of their customers use it)

The most options we get are Text, tab-delimited, csv, htm, and XML.

As for the particular errors, it really varies. With a 250 page check run (which we do almost every week) it will get somewhere between 100 and 200 checks in, and then just stop printing. The driver will act as though it's done printing, and that's that. Then we have to either reprint or void and re-issue. It's also common in scenarios where an action generate multiple reports, for it to get through the first report, or the first couple of reports, and then the web client just hangs indefinitely.

Is there a particular error you are getting? Typically, web client reports can be outputted as Word documents, then printed locally. I would discourage any printing to screen (using the Standard output) of large reports to then have to click the Print button to print them, especially as it relates to large reports.
