CRM2016

Is it possible to select x number of records on entity A , run a dialog on the same entity that creates a record in entity b and returns the entity B recordid to update the selected records in entity A

I don't think its possible, but I have to ask as its the most logical way of doing what I need to do

    Hi Tom

No problem. Thank you for all your input. Its not your run of the mill scenario. I will just go back to the drawing board and look at another route. I will have a look at your for each suggestion .. you never know I might be able to work around this problem, stranger things have happened

once again, thanks for all your input

    RE: Is this Possible

Hi Pete, thanks for the clarification.

Think of workflows as individual. Even if you select 10 records the workflow only processes one record at a time. You need a ForEach custom workflow step, which you can search for a free one or that is why N52 is so popular. Even in a ForEach that needs a list of records in a relationship, not in a list selected to run the dialog for, because the workflow looks at one record at a time.

Maybe there is another relationship between these records you could leverage to indicate the list of A that need updated with new B. But I do not see an easy way to iterate through A records and set a relationship for each one with a record that dynamically created during the workflow. Sorry for not having  better answer, there are plenty brighter minds out there that may give some tips.

    Hi Tom,

That's fairly close to what I need.

I need to select x number of records in entity A - Create a single record in entity B and return the lookup (B 1:N to A ) to all the selected records in entity A . You suggestions works great except for each selected record in entity A created its own record in entity B

    What I need is for example;

Select 10 records in A .. create 1 record in B . Update the 10 records in A with the lookup to the single record in B

sounds simple, but sounding and doing is a nightmare so far

    RE: Is this Possible

Hi Pete, thanks for reaching out.

Yes this is possible. If you are trying to return the recorded to entity A I assume you are attempting to set a lookup field on entity A that has a N:1 reltationship with A:B?

    1. Create workflow to run On Demand for entity A.

    2. Set conditions for running (if anything needs validate so not run on wrong record)

    3. Add Step - Create Record (B)

    4. Add Step - Update Record (A)

    5. Open this step there are dynamics fields on the right hand side. Scroll to the bottom of the list of related entities and you should see record created in earlier step (B). If you have the lookup field selected when you select that entity the field for the recordid can be added to populate that lookup.

    6. Save and Activate and test

Let me know if I misunderstood what you were attempting to accomplish. Have a great day!
