Thank you for your feedback - small to mid-size businesses would be around what number of employees?

One of the keys to answering the question may not be the number of employees, but the type of business, the volume of transactions and the nature of the reporting requirements.

I have to agree that small to mid-size is the sweet spot, but companies with 1,000's of employees that do very small volume of 'financial' or 'sales' transactions does not a big company make.  There are small number of employee companies that do 100's of transaction a day and large volumes of transactions in other ways that would make them a bigger company.

Watch metrics, they can sometimes be confusing.

    Just my thoughts.

I agree with Bill, the nature of your business and products should be carefully matched against Dynamics GP's capabilities.  There are many add-ons (third parties) that can fill in many gaps in standard GP.

When you hear or see industry discussions GP is always mentioned as a midmarket solution (actually mid-midmarket).  I have heard of companies running hundreds of users with revenue into the hundreds of millions running successfully on Dynamics GP.  What's "medium sized"?

There are many considerations for determining "fit" for an ERP.

I agree with Bill and Tim. The number of employees on its own cannot determine what it is a small, mid or large-size business.

There are many factors that have to be taken into account for answering your question. Following there are some of them:

    • Use of Financials Series module
    • Use of Distribution Series module
    • Use of Field Service Series module
    • Use of Manufacturing Series module
    • Use of Project Series module
    • Number of concurrent users
    • Use of Terminal Server
    • Use of Report Writer, Crystal Reports or Management Reporter
    • Use of an import routine/eConnect/Integration Manager
    • Number of transactions per day originating in Sales, Payables, General Ledger, etc
    • Online analytical processing (OLAP) cube generation
    • Third party products
    • Hardware

To give you an idea about real numbers... many years back I was told by our partner that when you had more then 10 concurrent user licenses on your GP setup, you could be considered falling into the Medium to bigger business size. My last company I worked for had 43 user licenses... but over 400 employees. My current company has 'only' 16 concurrent licenses and we have about 250 employees worldwide... with more users defined in GP as my previous company, but they only connect occasionally, with about 30 regular users. But we do use a strict access time control and don't allow more time than necessary in the system. Also many users are connecting GP thru the Business Portal (sort of limited user access) and/or external reporting solutions (Excel & SSRS).

License management and access control is key in GP to minimize the load in your system and keep your licensing cost under control.
