Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi, we are currently on gp 2010 R2 and planning to move over to GP 2016.  What we are trying to do is to install GP 2016 on the new server and then reattached our current companies DBs to the new installation.  Is there a guide somewhere on how to do this.

Thank you.

    RE: GP 2016 Upgrade installation

    Hi Lenny

Here are the steps you need to take.

    Build your test environment.

Be sure to install Dynamics GP 2010  v11.00.2248

Have your users run pre-upgrade reports in the production environment

    Backup your databases

Move the DYNAMICS and company databases to the test environment.

Also move your reports.dic and forms.dic files if they exist.  Look out for 3rd party dictionaries as well

Restore your databases into the test server.

Launch Dynamics GP Utilities and update your GP 2010 databases to the latest version

Update your reports and forms dictionaries to the latest version

Backup your databases and updated reports and forms dictionaries

    Install GP G2015 R2 v14.00725

Launch Dynamics Utilities and upgrade the databases to this version

Upgrade your Reports and forms dictionaries

Backup your databases and reports and forms dictionaries

    Install GP2016 R2

Launch Dynamics GP Utilities and upgrade your databases

Upgrade your Reports and forms dictionaries

At this point you can have your users run the post upgrade repots and validate the upgraded data.

I haven't mentioned that you must upgrade any 3rd party products you at each version level, so don't forget to do that.

Also, you may be changing the SQL Server version you are using so be sure to change the SQL version level as well.

    RE: GP 2016 Upgrade installation

What about the GP application itself?  Do I need to first install GP 2010  v11.00.2248 on our new server and upgrade DB from GP 2010 R2 SP2 v.11.00.1752?  And then install GP2015 R2 v14.00725 on the same server and upgrade DB, and once again install GP2016 R2 and upgrade DB?

    Thanks.

    RE: GP 2016 Upgrade installation

    Hi Lenny

Your first step would be to update your GP2010 databases from GP 2010 R2 SP2 v.11.00.1752 to GP 2010  v11.00.2248

Once you have completed this, you will then upgrade to GP2015 R2 v14.00725

Next you will upgrade to GP2016 R2 (I presume you are going to upgrade to GP2016 R2 and not R1)

Don't forget to upgrade your modified reports and forms dictionaries each step of the way and to make backups.

Here is a URL where you can access the GP2016 download page where you can find the Upgrade Guide

    Hi Lenny,

The last reply from Jeffrey provided the path to follow..  you can't skip the steps to upgrade from GP2010… you should start by taking full backups of all you db's and then restore all the DB's on your new SQL server.  Once done,  install & upgrade the various versions according the path provided above in previous reply.

We are on GP 2010 R2 SP2 v.11.00.1752.  So the first step of installation of GP 2016 on the new server is ok, right?  Now need to go through the DB conversion process.  How do I do that, is there a conversion guide somewhere?

    Thank you.

    RE: GP 2016 Upgrade installation

    Hi Lenny

That is correct, you need to upgrade from GP2010 to GP 2015 and then from GP 2015 to GP 2016

Note that you are on GP 2010 R2, you need to check the actual service pack level by going to Help > About Dynamics GP. Note the full version number.

You will need to be on at least GP 2010  version 11.00.2248 to do the upgrade. Anything less and then you have to update your GP2010 database first.

Here again is the upgrade path.  When upgrading make sure that you upgrade using the versions listed below

    GP 2010 SP4 (11.00.2248) >> GP2015 R2 (14.00.725) >> GP 2016 R2

    RE: GP 2016 Upgrade installation

We are moving to a brand new server.   So I did a  new installation of GP 2106 on the new server.  Do I understand you correct, is that I won't be able to migrate DBs from GP 2010 R2 to GP 2016 without going through the intermediate steps?

    Thanks.

    RE: GP 2016 Upgrade installation

    Hi Lenny

You cannot go from GP 2010 to GP 2016 directly.

    Here is the path you need to take:  GP 2010 SP4 (11.00.2248) >> GP2015 R2 (14.00.725) >> GP 2016 R2.

So as you can see there is an intermediate step that needs to be taken.

I would also recommend that you do a test upgrade first just to be on the safe side.  This way your end users can continue to work while you perform the test upgrade and iron out any issues that may arise.  Then you can do the production upgrade.

You should be able obtain the GP 2016 upgrade instructions guide by logging into Customer Source and going to the version download page.

If you can't find it let me know and I can email it to you.
