Manufactured Sub-Assemblies - How to prevent sales of these items

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum, and have a learned a lot browsing through the threads.

My problem is we have a number of items that are fabricated in our business that have to have work orders written to create them, and therefore must have item numbers. These items are typically WIP, and cannot be sold until they are added to a final assembly or sub-assembly. Our end users have no way to use these particular pieces until they are finished.

However, it's possible to create a sales order (presently) with these items. Previous users have tried adding "NOT FOR SALE" to the item description, but that hardly deters the truly uninformed.

I can't make the items INACTIVE or DISCONTINUED.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried setting up the BOM as phantom? this way they won't have any item available for sale.

Thank you Wassim, I had hoped this might work. However, I get a message from GP that says the part is used in an active BOM and therefor cannot be marked as "Discontinued"

    Hi Roger,

There's no harm in making the items Discontinued, they can still be used as sub-assemblies.  However this will allow you to unmark the checkbox Allow Sale of Discontinued Items in the Sales Oder processing Setup window, thus preventing users from adding them to SOP documents.

    Good luck
