//'s and \\'s in Dynamics.SET file - GP2013

I was told early in my GP 'infancy' that /'s and \'s can be used interchangeably in a SET file; they are equivalent. The installation media and client package installer uses /'s, which look odd to me but usually work. I say 'usually' because I have been able to document many workstations in an environment that have dictionary errors, even though all permissions and network accesses to the shared network location are open to the users. Changing their SET file to use \'s instead of /'s allows reports using these shared dictionaries to be printed. Maybe I have been operating under incorrect understanding all this time? Can anyone shed light on this?

Can you post a snip of the set file that does not work

    Thanks

    Russ,

I have been doing this for a bunch of years, and I have never used a '\\' in place of a '//', nor have I used a 'c:\' in place of a ':c:' in a SET file. Many moons ago, GP was the only accounting applications that ran on the MAC (Apple) platform, which is why these path differences exist.  I do not believe the path formats are interchangeable in GP at all, they are interchangeable to Windows and Apple machines.

I have been doing this for many years and I have always used \'s and /'s interchangeably in the DYNAMICS.SET file. I've not had a single problem with this either internally or at any of our customers.

That said, I typically stick to the following:

Local files all look like the following:

     :C:Microsoft Dynamics/GP2013/Dynamics.dic

And the files pointing to a network path all have \'s

I agree with Bill, it would be helpful to see an example from your file of what does is not working.

There are no dictionaries in the clients local \data folder in the installation folder.

This change in the .SET file works every time in their environment.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. R.

Thanks, Harry/Redbeard, I don't change the local mappings at all. Just the shared network location mappings, and simply replace the /'s with \'s. And it works every time.

As I've mentioned before, your help is greatly appreciated. R.

  • RussK Profile Picture

Thanks for your response, Victoria. See my reply to Bill. Your understanding mirrors what I understand and my practices. It is uncertain why the /'s don't render the same functionality as the \'s. Your input is very helpful. R.

    Victoria,

Since you've got the experience using the characters interchangeably, perhaps you can shed some light on this one. Is it possible that however these characters are used in the SET file they must be used consistently?

Harry, that is exactly what I saw when Russ posted the working snip.

I believe that you are correct, regardless of the \ / you have to be consistant.

Over the years, I have been in the habit of changing everything, when I do a UNC path, to \\ so that it mimics how you would enter it in the browser.

It is also the default when GP puts it into the path from the EDIT Launch file routine.

    Consistence Consistency is the key.

  • RussK Profile Picture

Absolutely. I don't mix \'s or /'s in the same file for remote paths. I don't ever touch the local paths, which keep their /'s. But, yes, I would think you would want to maintain consistency, and since the installer puts /'s in automatically, why go through the trouble of changing unless needed, as in this case? I am getting really quick using the find/replace feature of notepad as I move through this environment changing .SET files!

I didn't know GP uses \'s when entered in the EDIT LAUNCH FILE routine. But, it makes sense as it provides a 'browse' folder to use.
