Microsoft Dynamics GP and an alternative for two way replication

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

HI

I'm new in Microsoft Dynamics GP and the scenario is that our client wants to establish a solution to have two databases of Microsoft dynamics GP at the same time synchronized. I know that GP supports only snapshot and transactional replications but is there any alternative for having a 2-way replication?

    Hi Mary,

Are the transactions identical in both companies? If so you could record a macro when entering the first transaction and then play it for the second. I don't believe the database name is hardcoded into macros.

Another option might be using integration manager running as a scheduled task to push transactions from one database to another.

Either way I highly recommend you reach out to an experienced GP Partner as they will be better able to assist you in determining the client needs and how best to meet them.

    Regards,

    Kirk

    Hi

Actually i'm doing my best to find a solution for them and thank you so much for the responses.

Till now i`ve found that they`re using GP 11 and they don`t need to replicate all objects and tables just 5 or 6 and the volume of transactions are not that much high. the point is they want to do it in real-time basis. i haven`t found any scenario that we can do in SQL

    And another thought.....

Between the two instances, are they setup with the following architecture?

    Instance 1

    - company A

    - company B

    Instance 2

    - company A

    - company B

If so how will things like year-end close work? Which instance will be initiating this? Instance 1, Instance 2, either or? If this is the case then you need an almost near-real time sync between the two so transactions won't be missed where instance 1 might post a batch 15 minutes before Instance 2 runs a close and if the sync isn't near real-time then depending on the lag it might not make it to Instance 2 before the close process.

This is a real conundrum..... I'm not sure how this should be tackled but what I do know is that the client should take a different approach to remove this unnecessary complexity. This is where a potential "teachable moment" comes in to play and the consultant which I'm assuming you are because you mentioned this is for a client should step in and offer another solution that might make life for you and the client much less complex with less headaches because I can see where this could get hairy.  :)

HI Thank you so much for the answer & your help. I appreciate it.

and Yes any transaction should be recognized.

If company A books a transaction selling to company B, should that sale also be recognized as an intercompany transaction  as rcoded sale in companyA?

    Hi Tom

thanks for the answer. there is actually two different instances of database working locally separated. that`s not for fail-over actually nor for reporting.

The clients wants to have synchronized transactions in Microsoft dynamics GP for both databases and they need 2-way synchronsation.

Mary what is the purpose of this exercise?? Is it for fail-over?? I'm only asking because I think this question could have multiple answers but starting with sql2012 you can enable AlwaysOn HA which if its for fail-over I would go that route.

We currently have our GP environment sitting on one instance without fail-over or replication implemented but we do utilize AlwaysOn HA with our SharePoint environment which works like a charm.
