Why Work Description in Sales Header, and Branch Code, Department Code is the Sales Line are not imported from Excel?

Posted on by 47

I exported Sales Header and Sales Line to excel using Configuration Packages. Everything is exported except for the Sales Header's Work Description which gave me a clue that this field may not be imported also. BUT branch code & department code are both exported from the Sales Line but when I imported the open sales invoice from excel to NAV, these 2 fields become blank and I needed to manually encoded them.

Sorry for the late reply, we just resumed office today after Wednesday last week. I could not find "Dimensions as Columns" in NAV 2018. Here are some screenshots.

No found - "Dimensions as Columns"

Ok header level dimensions. Same idea applies with the validation. Your customer record probably has 0 dimensions set against it. So when that data is validated it blanks them.

The dimensions as columns method I mention is a good way to bypass this issue. Which is what you want.

I’m using Business Central screen grabs but the principal is the same. On the line for sales header set a tick in the below column:

That creates a new column per dimension in the fields list of that table. Note the numbers, which mean they are handled at the end. This should avoid the validation nuisance you’re seeing:

To clarify further, these are the fields that I am referring to that are always blank even if the excel import files have values.

not sure if I got your suggestion right about the dimensions. They have values during export and are used or populate as "is" when filling up the template for import. When imported, all of the fields are imported but not the dimensions (branch & dept). See the screenshot below with the default sequence from the exported template.

Do you mean I will move the marked columns to the end?

    Also, this alternative:

Re: "Or use choose columns on the tables area of the configuration package. Add a column for “Dimensions as columns”. Add the dimension value table in as well. This will create a new set of columns which are right at the end of the sequence."

Not sure how to do this, since both dimensions (branch & dept) have already their own columns selected in the Config, Package Fields as shown in the exported template above.

    Thank you in advance!

In the case of work description the data sits in a blob field which is binary so can’t be extracted with configuration packages.

As for the dimensions I would place them right at the end of the sequence so they get handled last. Or use choose columns on the tables area of the configuration package. Add a column for “Dimensions as columns”. Add the dimension value table in as well. This will create a new set of columns which are right at the end of the sequence. The validation is handled in a different way to help prevent overwriting. It generally happens when the master data in use has blank default dimensions
