D365 Customer Engagement (On Premise) deployment in Public Cloud

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

I am trying to understand if D365 Customer Engagement On-Premise can be deployed in public cloud virtualization (such as Azure or AWS).

This article does not have any indication if we can or cannot deploy in the public cloud.

Deploy and operate Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement (on-premises) | Microsoft Docs

Any comment on possibility are welcome.

Thanks,

Riwut

D365 Customer Engagement (On Premise) deployment in Public Cloud
I am trying to learn if we can run Dynamics 365 Customer engagement -on prem in a VM in the cloud just like we host it in the onpremise datacenter.

I found a Microsoft  white page (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/get-started/system-requirements-on-prem) which mentions that Dynamics Finance and Operations - on-prem version is NOT supported on public clouds including Azure cloud .

    QUESTIONS:
    • Does this apply to Dynamic 365 Customer Engagement onprem?
    • Is there any plan in Microsoft Roadmap to allow onprem Dynamics 365 Customer Engagment to run in all public  clouds ( Azure, AWS,GCP and OCI) ?
    • If we cannot host onprem versions in the cloud, what is the TECHNICAL reason for this?
    • Assuming we have installed and run it, can we get upgrade/maintenance support for the product from Microsoft?

We appreiate if  someone can shed some light on this subject.

    Regards,

    Mehmet

    Hey!

    1. As far as I've seen, there's no EUL violation deploying on Azure Cloud services.  However, you might need a lot of effort (Money, time, resources) in order to provide a Production Level using virtual machines: VMs to provide high Availability, lots of storage (maybe premium storage to get the appropriate response time from the disks).  Therefore, going to Online services might be cheaper to maintain...

    2. As far as I see, data is encrypted at rest by default (docs.microsoft.com/.../manage-encryption-key).  However, if you purchase a specific number of licenses you can enable additional encryption (before environments are created).  Online services also have an Auditing feature (so you can track "Who accessed what" at any point.

    Thanks PerezAguiar

I agree that based on the software requirements, there shouldn't be any issue deploying the D365 CE on-premise to public cloud infrastructure. I am just worried if this will violate user licensing agreement.

I compare the situation with Microsoft D365 Finance + Operation (on-premise) here - On-premises deployment overview - Finance & Operations | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Docs. The product stated in important notes - that D365 + Operation (on-premise) is not supported on any public cloud infrastructure, including Microsoft Azure Cloud services.

I believe in D365 F&O, the restriction is towards licensing / legal and not due to the technical requirement.

    Discussion point :

    1. Since there is no important note for D365 CE shall we assume that no EUL violation if I deploy in Microsoft Azure Cloud services?

    2. D365 CE Online stores the data in dataverse. Although Microsoft will not have access to the data in dataverse, however the some sensitive customer does not want to store the data in provider's managed / multitenant data store. Any thought how D365 CE Online can address the data sensitivity concern?

    Best regards,

    Riwut

    Hey!

The requirements for the software (DB Server + Application servers) are documented on Software requirements for Dynamics 365 Server | Microsoft Docs.  There's a specific section about virtualization on that document.  I think that you might use Azure (for example).  However, if you're already using Cloud to host AD+DB+Storage+AppServer, why not moving directly to the Online version (that relies on the same services)?  Is there any particular business/Security need that justifies this approach?

    Best regards
