Hi all,

I wonder if there are people who has experience with the online retail store features in AX2012? (

https://technet.microsoft.com/EN-US/library/dn194016.aspx)

What are advantages or disadvantages. How much time did it take to get it up and running? What were the total cost of investment involved?

I will detail the sort experience that I had with online retail store, mainly in setting pre-sales demos. It might not be the “experience” that you were looking for in your question, others members might have deeper experience on this topic.

You should consider the online retail store as a framework to expose a subset of the AX retail functionality to the internet / anonymous users.  I mentioned framework and not a final product, , because setting up an online stores could require some hard customizations to achieve the customer requirements. You can check that most online stores are completely different layouts and functionality from each other’s ( custom layouts, etc.)

This framework exposes most logic natively from AX and is not required to create custom code, for example, it can handle sales orders / discounts. The licensing as some benefits, because you are  licensing per server core with unlimited users, evidently you are limited by CPU capacity.

In 2 days it was possible to setup the online store without major customizations.

    Hi Nuno,

Many thanks for your answer. When reading the TechNet pages, it looks like we have to invest a lot of time before we would be able to setup the store in 2 days.

The purpose where we now looking into this feature would be supporting a company which has a shop, but the online shop is currently supplemental. The turnover is not that much. It is not the main focus of this company, but could grow a bit in the future. So we are looking for cost efficient solutions.

Yes, 2 days for setting up a demo,  a few more days for a real project.  First I recommend to check the price per CPU, since it can be expensive.

Just to give you an idea of the effort to setup online retail, I have posted a guide to install retail components at HQ. This should be more or less 40% of the requited setup to configure online retail, without any customizations.
