Hope someone out there can help me. We have a client that is currently on GP10SP3 with SQL2005 SP2 + Q970895. Their desire is to move up to GP2010R2 and SQL2008R2. I am trying to determine the upgrade path and issues with Sort Order.
My original thought was to take them to GP10SP5 and then upgrade them to SQL2008R2 to GP2010R2. We are having some odd issues there and are at a point to start over from scratch. What woudl be the best path?
GP2101R2 is really just GP2010SP2, correct?
My other concern is the sort order... we are currently on
SQL_Latin1_General_CP437_BIN is Latin1-General, binary sort for Unicode Data, SQL Server Sort Order 30 on Code Page 437 for non-Unicode Data.
This does not appear to the be a supported sort order for GP2010 on SQL08R2. Is it? This client has been on GP for a while. It is working with GP10 now.
I have TK 943966 - looks to me like if we are not on the correct sort order we truley have to re-import all the data into a new database? Is that correct?

The process is a very ugly one and should only be done by professionals. You are essentially copying everything table out of SQL to a text file and then reimporting them back in. It can be a very long process given the size of your database. So if you feel more comfortable having MS perform this process go for it.
Robyn, good day, while I agree with my peers, I must add a few words to this, Richard and Ian are way too correct on their comments but I had 2 customers this 2011 going from Binary to a supported Collation, Microsoft states that any collation conversions are supported only if done by MBS Professional Services, I tried the first time with luck and everything worked fine, but the customer was going to be out of support, so we restored the binary and had to send it to MBS.
I know it costs but that guarantees that you are still covered under support.
Your upgrade path above looks fine.
Once you have the Collation issue sorted...
You're on GP10 SP5 which supports SQL2008 R2 - so no problems there.
Once everything is on SQL2008 R2, update all databases to compatibility level 100.
Then install GP2010 R2 and run utilities.
If this doesn't work for some reason, try installing and upgrading GP2010 RTM first.
If you get any error messages, post them here.
Ian.
In the past I have done a bulk copy out and then a bulk copy in to go from one collation sequence to another. The old binary sort order came from the old GP for SQL where that was the only supported collation sequence.
