Relationship between different Entities and Fields - how to?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

I need some help regarding the following customization difficulty:

Goal: the modification date & user of fields/records of Entity A should influence the modified date and user in Entity B. One direction only...A -->B

The view of the records of Entity A is embedded in the form of entity B. There is a relationship between those two matched by one field already.

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Thank you Wayne,

    good point.

Ok, so lets assume i would create a specific field in Entity B for that purpose. For example a field that "copies" or "looksup" the value of the modified date field of Entity A.

I still don´t know how create/customize this relation in the system.

Since the modification date is something the system manages, you would either need to write code to override it, or do some kind of workflow where updating the child record also updates a field on the parent record, thereby also updating the ModifiedOn date.  However, if anyone actually updates the parent record afterward, the ModifiedOn date would change again.

Likely you should make a custom date field to do what you want, because trying to manhandle the ModifiedOn date is only going to lead to unexpected results, since CRM manages that field.
