PDF Font Problems

Hello,

since a few days we have a lot of customers that can’t read our E-Mailed PDF-Documents created in AX 2009. The letters are unreadable (looks like Windings font). And also on some workplaces at our company the problem occurs. No windows updates were installed on the workplaces and no AX changes were done the last days. The Problem occurs in the newest Adobe Acrobat Reader (2018) - I dont know if it also occurs in a different reader because the problem is hard to reproduce.

If the User logs on and off sometimes the problem is fixed and then re occurs a day later or so. But also a lot of our customers have the problem - so this can’t be PC/Server specific.

If we create the PDFs with embedded fonts it works - but we send a lot of PDFs every day and we search a better solution.

Maybe Adobe changed something in the newest PDF Reader.

We only use the Arial font in the PDFs so the problem must have something to do with the way AX declared the font in the PDFs.

When I look into the used fonts of the PDFs I see that Arial font is included as CID and Coded as Identity-H --> I think it must have something to do with this.

Other PDF Documents with Arial font (created in Word) don’t have this CID and Identity-H and can be opened without Problems - it only occurs in our PDFs created in AX 2009.

Is there a way to change this CID or Identity-H when I create the PDF from AX 2009? Any other ideas?

Hope someone can help me :(

    Hi

    We are having exact same problems, at some of our customers. We have seen it both on AX 2009 and AX 40 customers.
    Problem started last week after latest Adobe Reader DC update.
    PDF is unreadable at one user but another user can read same PDF without problems. Both users use same version of Adobe Reader.
    When a user with unreadable PDF (in Adobe Reader) opens the same PDF with Foxit PDF reader or from Edge browser, the PDF shows normal.

    A user can also have the problem one day, and the day after problem has disappeared. Also a restart of computer can solve the problem - without any new updates in the meantime.

    Hi,

    Same problem for me with AX4, since one week : 20171114 ?

    Some differents threads exist here as :

    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2414883

    In one post, Adobe says :

    "Can you confirm if the systems having the issue have the following windows updates installed? If yes, can you try removing one or both the updates and see the result.

    * KB 4048955

    * KB 4048954

    * KB 4041778"

    Thx

    Hello,

    we have exactly the same problem since a few days.

    However there is a workaround: the unreadable file in Acrobat Reader is well readable in Firefox.

    Hi all,

    Another one with the same problem. A customer has notified us that yesterday has started to have problems with purchase orders and vend invoices sent by email in PDF format. Not all the recipients have problems to open the PDF files correctly.

    We cannot suggest to all the customers of our customer to open the file with another program... we have to try to solve it in the origin.

    We are trying with PDF with embedded Font as temporal workaround, but each the size of each sent file is 10 times larger.

    Any suggestion is grateful.

    Regards,

    Kala

    I turned off "Use Local Fonts" in acrobat reader and restarted the machine, that seems to be a temporarily fix.

    PDFs that are not readable, do you know if they are all for origin "Microsoft Dynamics AX" ?

    or have you encountered similar cases with PDFs generated by other tools?

    About me, MS Dynamics AX4.

    Thx

    Same here... Doublebyte encoded text displays as scrambled, completely wrong characters etc. using newest Acrobat Reader 2018.009.20044

    Recently received pdf, document generated using Axapta  (build2503.1610). Pdf producer is listed as MAMO4. Fonts used in document are truetype Arial (CID) (encoding Identity-H) and same with Arial bold (CID/Identity-H) encoding. So clearly there is a problem with doublebyte character sets.

    Note to add in to previous comment, PDF complete displays correct characters, but character spacing is all over and single characters widths are messed too.

    I wish I could help.  We are having customers with the same problem.  We can read the files fine, but some recipients see messed up fonts.  We believe removing a bitmap logo from the reports is helping, but I have no idea why.  Something must have changed in the Adobe software that some people have.  If we choose the Embed Fonts option that helps, but the file sizes are huge when you do this.  If you find a solution, please let me know.  We're on AX 2009.
