AD User groups and NAV 2016 (Mass User Creation)

Hi,

I am also struggling with the configuration of AD User groups and NAV 2016.

I want to install/configure NAV 2016 in our University.

We have an Active Directory with some Groups for students, lectures, admin etc.

If I add an User directly to the WindowsClient (RTC) it works fine.

But if I add our AD Group for example "Students", the members of these Groups are not able to log on.

Because we have to many Students, it is not possible to add everyone .

The Group is added to the SQL Server and the NAV DENO DB.

The access from the development environment (ClassicClient) works fine.

Only if you want to run a Page, Table in the Windows Client(RTC) you get the Message that the user does not have the permission to access MS Dynamics NAV.

In 2016 I also miss the security configuration options: standard and enhanced. In the older versions it could be found on the options tab of the alter database configuration

Does someone as a solution for this Problem.

Thanks in advance

Stefan

Try playing with the change of the security model of your database, e.g. putting it to Standard. To be able to change this setting the database needs to go into “Single User mode”.

    Thank you for your answer,

but unfortunately it does not solve my problem.

I set the DB to single mode, but in 2016 Developer Environment the option for setting the DB to standard mode did not appear.

    Hi,

There has been lot of changes in newer version and MS has removed the option of Security Model, Sync. of users etc. from the DB.

What you can do here is, create one user with License Type as "Windows Group" and then assign the required permissions sets to this Windows Group user.

Further any Individual members of the Windows group will then inherit the permissions for this user. However, you would still require to create the user in the NAV.

You can always define the procedure that, while creating the user in domain, one should create the user in NAV as well. Ideally this should not take much time.

Alternatively, you can check the working of "Credential types" as UserName or NavUserPassword and see if it helps.

Can you pl. suggest the types of transactions being performed by the University students in NAV? If at all is about reporting, please explore the possibilities of  creating few generic user Ids and share it with group of people (having Credential Type as NAVUserPassword), if suitable.

If you still prefer, you can always provide your recommendation to Microsoft, so that they can consider the same to be included in future release.

    Best Regards,

    Vishal Salot

Thank you very much for your reply,

we will try it this Semester with a small group of Students by using the  NAVUserPassword.

If this does not work we will try to create the NAV users though a powershell-script.

    kind regards,

    Stefan B.

    from msdn https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj551750(v=nav.90).aspx

    License Type Windows Group
Use this license type to create a Microsoft Dynamics NAV user account that is based on a Windows group and has explicit permissions in Microsoft Dynamics NAV. Individual members of the Windows group will then inherit the permissions for this user.

    JJ551750.Important(en-us,NAV.90).gifImportant
For each member of the Windows group, you create a Microsoft Dynamics NAV user account, which does not explicitly have any permissions. Users then log on by using their Microsoft Dynamics NAV user account credentials.

Windows Group licensing is a form of license multiplexing. Multiplexing does not reduce the number of user licenses required to access a Microsoft Dynamics NAV solution.

    ---------------------

best you create all the users with powershell commands.

create users in bulk, reading from a csv file:

Hi, maybe you could try the following script: github.com/.../Add-NAVUsersFromAD.ps1

I added this contribution to the Waldo`s PowerShell modules but I am not sure if people use it (I use it and it is very useful in many cases).
