Recently upgraded from GP 10 to a GP 2013 test environment, and the module home pages are throwing our users for a bit of a loop, with all the vertical scroll bars (7 on one page at times). Is there a way to modify, customize, the presentation of the data on each modules home page (Financial, Inventory, etc.) so that it follows more of a GP 10 method (a single vertical scroll bar), or something completely different? Opened to advanced, but Microsoft supported, customization.

I'm glad you replied... some people just get cheeky.
Thank you very much for your detailed thoughts on GP 2013 layout; I certainly understand it's your preference, and for many others. I agree that the layout would work best if consistently hitting the maximize button on each pane. I believe this layout would be perfect if one could dynamically re-size each pane, as one could on a simple Web 2.0 app as made popular in 2006. I was just a bit baffled at this new flow, which seemingly goes against what one may expect.
I wouldn't really consider the new platform, with constraint of this topic, as "so much flexibility" though? It's a lock-in to a particular flow, one way or another?
Anyhow, the ultimate point of debate is a resolution, and I've resolved we'll need to live with it, engage with it and learn how to best utilize the new format going forward.
Thanks again Richard.
I'm glad you recognized my message....some people just get mad.
The new desktop allows a user to select one pane as a primary pane and show it in 2/3 of the desk top, eliminating the scroll bars. They can easily click on another pane changing from cards as the primary to transactions as the primary, parking cards and spreading out transactions. If they want to us 7 small windows, they can organize them any way they want, however, most people select the tasks they need to perform (cards, transactions, reports) and let the other panes stack up on the right.
Each pane has a four arrow icon in the upper right. Clicking on this arrow makes the pane the primary pane for the moment. In most cases, the scroll bar disappears in the primary pane. Simply click on another arrow and the panes swap.
Of course, the tool bar menu always works. Select Transactions->Sales -> and Sales Transaction Entry to open the SOP transaction entry window. There is so much flexibility that when I find myself supporting a V10 user I am wishing that they would upgrade soon.
As for the book, there is much more in that book such as how to customize (using standard GP unmodified) lookups and searches, how to use Business Alerts, and much more.
Hi Richard, thanks for your satirical opening; we cannot stay on GP 10.
Thankfully my original question looks to be answered: one cannot.
In which way(s) do you find the movable panes more beneficial, with each potentially having a vertical scroll bar vis-a-vis having a single window with expandable/collapsible categories and a single unified vertical that can be called by the mouse without selecting a pane first? On larger screens, with GP 10, a scroll bar doesn't even exist because everything fits, but on GP 2013 I have seven on one page and can only maximize one? I can see how moving and removing the panes is nice, if the one you consistently use would have been off page in GP 10, but outside of that it's a usability gaffe in my book. Enlighten me how to use these panes without selling me a wonderful book?
Well, you could stay on GP 10
My personal opinion about customizations is DON'T. Each customization needs to be re-tested and possibly re-created with each major upgrade. Third party ISVs live with this and upgrade their add-on products all the time. If you can work within the product, do.
I find the movable panes in the home page wonderful. GP used to work this way through V8 and when they took it away, people complained. Now that it is back, all but a few people are thrilled.
Your users are smart enough, if taught how to use these panes, to adapt. We have a book, the MS Dynamics Power Users Handbook, that explains how to use this desktop. IT IS WONDERFUL.
Natarajan; thanks I'm aware of that but those options are more limited than what GP10 provided... either a module too small or much too big with no way of dynamically sizing them or doing away with the design altogether?
Thanks; I'm aware of being able to drag and drop the modules but I'd like either dynamically resize them or alternate (GP 10 view).
Just click the module area. Then drag and drop to modify the area based on your own view.
Hope this helps!!!
Hi Eisch,
you can change the GP2013 page layout using Customize Area Page option.
