Using feature switch Enable Business Unit Scoping in Customer Insights - Journeys

Dear CI Community,

I’m exploring the Business Unit Scoping feature in Customer Insights – Journeys and want to understand how it affects segmentation.

Requirement

  • The Marketing team should only be able to include Contacts from their own Business Unit.

  • They should not be able to include Contacts from other Business Units.

Scenario

  • The Country table is part of Master Data.

  • This table is owned by the top (parent) Business Unit.

  • Contacts are owned by different Business Units.

  •

Questions

  • If Business Unit Scoping is enabled:

    • Can the Marketing team still create a segment for all Contacts in a specific country when the Country table is owned by the top BU?

    • Or can they only segment using data that is owned by their own BU?

  • Does Business Unit Scoping:

    • Apply only to Contacts, or

    • Apply to all related entities used in segmentation (such as Country)?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hello,

When Business Unit Scoping is enabled in Customer Insights – Journeys:

✅ Segmentation is scoped by Contact ownership (BU)
✅ Master / reference tables (like Country) owned by the root BU are still usable
❌ Contacts from other BUs cannot be included in segments

So yes, Marketing users can segment Contacts in a specific Country, as long as the Contacts themselves belong to their BU.

Aspect Behavior with BU Scoping Enabled
Segment on Contact attributes ✅ Allowed
Segment using Country table (root BU) ✅ Allowed
Include Contacts from other BUs ❌ Not allowed
Reference shared master data ✅ Allowed
BU Scoping enforced on Country entity ❌ No
BU Scoping enforced on Contact ✅ Yes

In Dynamics 365 Customer Insights – Journeys, Business Unit Scoping restricts segmentation based on Contact ownership.
    •  You can use shared/master data like Country (even if owned by parent BU)
    •  But segments will only include Contacts from the user’s own Business Unit
    •  Contacts from other BUs cannot be included

BU Scoping applies across entities, but final segmentation is always limited by Contact ownership (BU).
