Dates formatting being ignored on download of Excel Template from D365 (CRM)

I created an Excel Template from D365 for a particular view, added some coloring to a few column titles to denote which ones should not be modified by the user (protecting the sheet will lock the entire sheet and not the locked cells when the data is downloaded) and uploaded the new template to the system templates. If I use this template to download a new set of data, the date fields show in their native numeric date value and not formatted as date. I have tried setting the format to some date format but the download process seems to ignore the format. Any ideas on whether I must be doing something different or is this a bug.
