Write privilege dependency for Assign

Hi,

I have one user role where the edit privilege for custom entity is set to user level and assign privilege to organization level. This is to ensure that to edit the record the user should assign the record to himself and then edit.

But the Assign is not working. It is throwing error as write access required for that entity.

My question is why write access is required for assign the record. Is there anything wrong I am doing or this is how crm works?

In order to assign, you need to provide Update Permission to the entity as well as the Assign permission. Assign basically makes a change to the entity fields as well, thus requires update permissions...

If I modify the role to set the edit privilege for custom entity to organization level then it works. But I dont want this.
