Having 2nd Instance of Dynamics on same SQL Server

Hi All,

We have 2 GP site one in Europe and one in USA.  We are planning to move one of the company from Europe into USA server.  Since both has different dynamics and products, we are planning to have a 2nd instance on same SQL server and install new client with separate Dynamics instance and copy the Dynamics & company database and restore it on new instance.  So the USA server will have old dynamics and its own companies and 2nd new Dynamics2 and one new company which is copied from server in Europe.  My question is whether we can use the same GP License key for the 2nd new Dynamics Instance for the new company.

Babu - it is rare that you would need a different instance of GP.  What I have seen in the past is unique DYNAMICS.SET files which load the software.  I have worked with a client with 165 concurrent users where some companies have access to Canadian Payroll & WennSoft (Key2Act) while others have US Payroll and Project Accounting.  They still used the same instance of SQL, but users called up a unique DYNAMICS.SET file to load the appropriate software for the companies the user maintained.

The license key is tied to the primary company name and user count. If you create another SQL Instance, then you would need to purchase another company license with there own user count.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for your email.  The reason for having different Dynamics is both Dynamics has different set of currency using multi currency.  So currency index on one Dynamics is different to currency index on another Dynamics so I cannot copy the existing company into the other Dynamics directly.

    Hi Babu,

I'm working since a few months on a similar customer project where 2 different GP instances need to be merged. One being on GP 2010 and the other on 2015.

Fortunately they used the out-of-the-box currencies, thus they are sharing the same currency indexes and I had not to run scripts to adjust for those.

However, I had to write SQL scripts to populate the missing FX rates from the GP 2015 instance, as they were using MC transactions in that instance for about 3-4 different currencies, whereas the GP 2010 was only in native currency (CAD).

PM me know if you want more details.
