Keyboard & On Screen Keyboard

I have a large customer who, periodically loses keyboard functionality. As far as I can tell, the terminal completely stops receiving input, as none of the on screen buttons work, including the on-screen keyboard, as well as the physical keyboard. They report that the terminal is "freezing" but the cursor still follows touch on the screen.

Here is the odd part - When I remote into the "frozen" terminal, they keyboards start working again. I don't have to do anything, in fact the last two times, I have just initiated the remote and asked them if it was fixed. The answer was "Yes! What did you do?" Unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in does not fix it. A reboot of the terminal does, but they just call me to remote in and fix it.

This site has 11 locations and 30 terminals total. Between all of these it happens to maybe 1 - 2 terminals per day. The problem is, when it happens on the server terminal, it takes down the whole store.

The terminals are running POS Ready 7 and RMS 2.0 with CU5. Anybody seen behavior like this in RMS or otherwise?

I am out of ideas. Thank you,

it sounds like the terminal is getting slow for some reason or some driver or software is not getting enough resources and ends up in "not responding" situation, I hope terminal is dedicated to RMS only

is it the same terminal every time or random?

did you made any recent updates or changes to the server, network or terminal?

Thank you for the quick response Arif,

It is not the same terminal each time. Sometimes it is the server register, sometimes it is a client. The register is dedicated to RMS only. This is a new install, so this didn't start happening out of the blue. It has been an issue since the system was installed.

I thought maybe SQL was not getting enough resources, but it seems odd that when I  connect to the terminal remotely, it would start working and free up those resources. We do have an Office PC with more resources, so I could try running the DB on that to see if that makes a difference. I just like to have a terminal that can run even when the network goes down.

are you using one of the terminal as server and register?

is it the regular PC USB Keyboard? (next time just try unplugging the keybd from terminal and re-plug to see if that makes it work)

    what version of SQL?

have you setup each terminal for offline database, in case network goes down?

just make sure all RMS machine are running same RMS and SQL version

I have a dedicated server that is not a register. This is happening at the latest site on all 4 registers a couple times a day. Again, all that is happening is we lose keyboard input, but it isn't a keyboard issue (at least I don't see how it could be) because the numeric pad stops working on the touchscreen as well. The department keys on the touchscreen continue to work.

You mention dedicated server in this post and terminal as server in original post. Are you describing two different locations with same issue?

Is POS Ready 7 the common factor with same CPU units?

Can you substitute a standard Window 7 Pro CPU for testing purposes and see if that station experiences the problem? Or did you install all-in-one units where it is impractical to try other hardware?
