Hi Friends,
We are planning to upgrade Our Great Plains 8.0 application server.
GP is running on Windows Server 2000 32 bit version and need to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 64 bit version.
Would you clarify me on the following queries please.
1. Will Great Plains 8.0 SP4a(8.00g64) run on Windows Server 2008 64 bit version? If yes, any critical things needs to be considered before installing.
2. GP is tightly integrated with other systems thro' eConnect interfaces. So, anything should be considered before installing eConnect 8.0 components on Windows Server 2008 64 version?
3. Currently GP is running on SQL Server 2000 SP4 (Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.2039). Can we install SQL Server 2008 and restore the 2000 databases and change the compatibility to 8.0(ie SQL 2000)?
PS:
David replied in one of the forum that From V8.0 SP4 GP should be compatible with SQL 2005. But also wanted to check if it works with SQL 2008. Otherwise we are planning to go for SQL 2005.
No plan to upgrade the GP 8.0 to newer version as of now, Since its tightly integrated. Also not using modules other than SOP,RM and Collections Management.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jothi Krishna

Any help on the above query would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Jothi,
Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 and later versions are currently the only versions of Microsoft Dynamics GP that support Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Versions before GP10 do not supported Windows Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008
GP 8 doesn't support Win 2008/SQL 2008. It is not recommended to use 64 bit as some of third party apps won't support that and the document is also not clearly giving which is supported and which is not.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Mohan
Hi Tina, Mohan,
Thank you very much for the timely response.
It really helps. Greatly appreciated.
Now, we are planning to go for Win 2003 and SQL 2005.
Would you please let me know , Restoring the current SQL 2000 SP4 GP databases in SQL 2005 and setting up the compatibility to 8( SQL 2000) will cause any issues? . Should we consider anything before we go ahead with that?
Any insight on this would be really helpful for me.
Thanks in advance.
There should not be any issue in restoring using compatibility 8. I recommend you to do a test upgrade of GP and also use third party/customization after the upgrade and see any issues, this way you can minimize surprises after the live upgrade.
Based on your first email it seems you are not planning to upgrade GP? The only risk I can see here is support from Microsoft is no longer available for for GP8.
Hi Mohan,
Thank you for your cooperation and support that you have extended to me.
Yes, we are planning for a test upgrade. Since i need to estimate the efforts required before that, i just wanted to make sure that above things are possible.
We are not planning for GP upgrade currently, Coz client is using only SOP,RM and collections managment modules and GP is tightly integrated with other applications.
Thank you very much again :)
