Step by step guide to deploy Microsoft Service Updates

Posted on by 177
Hi all,

I have received a notfication on my UAT environment that it has a pending service update. I have looked all over for a detailed guide on what to do but i havent been able to find a complete documentation of it, only pieces here and there. Most guides are either focused on how to create a pipeline for NuGet packages or how to go from a version that is not using extension to a version that is. I want to make sure that i understand the process correct and at the same time, this guide might help others.

My environment is currently running version 10.0.37 and i want to update to 10.0.38.
Here is my understanding of the process i have to go through. Please correct me or fill in the gaps. If you think i am spot on, please give me a like or comment so that i know that my understanding is correct:

1. Read up on the updates
    - How do they impact developers and users of the system

2. Apply update to UAT
    - Go to the details page of the UAT environment and find the update in the /Available updates/ section.
    - Click /View update/ and then /Save Package/ (this will give you a list of hotfixes to choose from)
    - Select all hotfixes and click /Save Package/ (this will save the package in your asset library)
    - Go to your UAT environment at click maintain/apply updates
    - Select your package and click apply

3. Update the rest of your environments (except production) with same package.
     - Production will automatically be updated one week from the date that the UAT is forcefully updated.

4. Update NuGet packages
    - Go to /shared asset library/ and download the new versions of the NuGet packages locally

    - Upload the New versions of the NuGet packages to your Azure artifact Feed
    - Update the NuGet packages versions in your packages.config
    - Build the lates version of your code and deploy it to your dev environment, to make sure the everything is still working after the NuGet packages update.
