Maximum Number of Entities at each level is 256?

We are receiving an error in Microsoft DYnamics GP 2013 that says "You can't add any more entities at this level. The maximum number of entities at each level is 256". It comes up in the Organization Structure Setup window when attempting to add an entity.

Is this a system limitation, or is it something that can be increased?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Aaron,

This looks like to be a system limitation for the Org Structure setup.. I've used in the past under GP 2010 but never ran into such an error message. You may want to consider shortening your various labels. This looks like a field length limit that is imposed by the SQL table where the data is stored.

Check the tables displayed from this list:

gptables.azurecurve.co.uk/.../

You can't have more than 5 levels in the ORG structure, with each level allowed up to 20 chars, which makes a total of 100, so I'm wondering where this message comes from..

Are you using any 3rd-party add-on to GP or external tools ? in which window in GP do you get this message ?

This is the window that it comes up in (Image Below) , with the error message itself. We use addons such as Mekorma MICR, Nolan Intercompany and Smartlist Builder. Let me know if I can provide any more info. Thanks!

The Entity ID's are stored in the Table DYNAMICS..ORG40100 and it really does look like the limitation is programatically limited to 256 levels..

This is only something that could be confirmed by the Microsoft GP support team, but one way to get this changed would be to submit a suggestion to extend this limit.

I went into my demo Fabrikam company on the latest GP 18.3 build and was able to confirm the limitation. I populated from the back-end the ORG40100 table with some 250 rows, and then kept adding more rows manually until I hit the error message:

This was probably done intentionally to avoid having too many levels to manage in GP.. you can have up to 4 levels with 255 entities each, which means 1020 combinations.. That's a log for an organizational structure. How many users do you have in GP ?

The ORG level security was meant to limit users access to specific GL accounts based on their ORG assignment...

Does anyone know if anything has changed with this limitation in GP 2018 or newer?

Or does anyone have a better option to limit security based on entities within GP?
