what is the Benefit of using Categories instead of Products?

Dear

In the Sales and Procurement, we can either use AX products or AX categories.

In your professional opinion , what is the advantage of using the AX Categories instead of conventionally creating a product

how and when would you use it ?

Dear Patrick,

There are some well known pros and cons of using procurement category instead of using actual codified item/product.

Pros

1. You don't need to maintain inventory for such item that actually company doesn't maintain physically. Like office supply for daily use.

2. Saves your time from creating item from fixed asset.

3. You can create PO,PR,for Misc. Expense.

4. From Accounting perspective it is safe to maintain expenses rather then pass manual JV or adjust/add charges.

And many more that we use in everyday transaction.

Cons

1. No proper inventory tracking.

Above explanation is my personal analysis.

Hi Patrick,

In addition: it can replace creating a service item. Using categories is not recommended if you need to keep track of your on-hand.
