Office 365 Display Name and Dynamics 365

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello,,

I have a question regarding the coupling of Office 365 and Dynamics 365, both online. Dynamics makes use of the user data from AAD and thus relies on the data maintained within O365. It makes use of the surname and first name, but the displayname seems to be unaccessible in D365.

However, the display name is our choice to get salutations and academic titles into the names shown in connection with e-mails, etc.

And now we have an issue: How do we get this information into Dynamics, e.g. to make consistent use of the same salutation for automatic letterhead generation? How else might we get salutation / title information transfered from O365 to D365?

Thanks in advance for any hint.

Aric, did you ever find a resolution to this?

From what I know, there is no display name that is being transferred between O365 and D365. If you populate some of the other fields in O365 on the user record, they will be migrated when you create the D365 user, but the Display Name does not have a match in Dynamics 365.

This basically lives you with no choice but to either manually do this, or possibly if you need it for signatures, you can generated user signatures.

I don't think there is a resolution to the problem that you are having.

The creation of users in Dynamics are controlled by O365, and unless the correct fields are synched between the environments you are not going to get the results.

Maybe someone else will have a different answer for you, but I am reluctant on this one. Sorry.

    Thanks, Aric.

Unfortunately, my issue is slightly different: There is a "display name" field in the Office 365 user settings, which is used e.g. for e-mail sender information. It is to be edited manually there and the way to go for title & salutation info on the e-mail and system side.

However, the only information that seems to be available on the Dynamics side is the first and last name from Office 365, not the display name (O365) and then Dynamics builds up its own display name based on first and last name (as you describe), not using the Office/AAD/Exchange value.

Now, how to get consistent naming for e-mail sender names (O365 , Exchange) and letterhead information / sales process documents (D365)?

This is not a pure D365 issue nor a O365 issue but unfortunately some integration issue in between...

The Display Names in Dynamics 365 are stored in the Full Name field (of Contact or User for example), and are based on the data that was entered in the First and Last Name fields.

You can control how the display names are displayed to a certain extend, but not including titles and salutations.

If you go to Settings -> Administration -> System Settings, in the General Tab you will see the Name Format option, where you can select one of 8 options for the name field. This is configured across the board, so will be for users, contacts, etc...

If you need to display name to still be different, you can either create a custom display name field, and using a workflow possibly append the different values to make it up, or you can try doing the same with the full name field using a workflow or a plugin.

    Hope this helps.
