All you should need to do is install RMS on the computer you are working on.  Then open RMS Store Operations Administrator, point the connection to wherever the database is located.  You don't need to change your file sharing options (unless you want to share labels or custom reports) to access RMS remotely.  The only other possible issue would be if SQL is not setup to allow remote connections or if the remote computer has a firewall blocking traffic.  I would check these things and try again.

Just a note when running RMS across a VPN.  RMS is a very 'chatty' program.  It sends information to the server every 1/2 second or so to make sure the server is still alive.  If you have a slow or unstable connection on either end, it could end up being a very frustrating experience from the remote computer.

Ryan mentioned all these issues, but you might need these details:

    1. To access SQL through firewall, open port TCP 1433

    2. script to allow remote sql control
EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1
    RECONFIGURE
    EXEC sp_configure 'xp_cmdshell', 1
    RECONFIGURE

    3. don't try to use SO Manager over a slow VPN connection, remote control a local terminal instead.
