Is 3rd party Check Printing software really necessary?

When we migrated to Dynamics GP 2010 several years ago, the partner we used insisted that we install Mekorma's software suite for printing checks. However, recently the Mekorma software has begun to give us problems, and they want thousands of dollars to fix a problem that is only occurring with their software.

So my question is the following: Can payables and payroll checks be printed without additional software if we already have the MICR Printer? What is the advantage that is offered by these 3rd parties? Also, has anyone used Printboss by Wellspring Software? They appear to be competitors of Mekorma.

    I heard that are many users are using MICR software for AP and PR check printing in GP. But, I am not much more heard about the Printboss by Wellspring Software.

    There is another once printing software is also available, please have a look on the below AP/PR prints from MazQ technologies.

    Note: But, I think MICR is good software for check printing in GP as of now.

    You can print MICR checks directly out of GP without 3rd party software.  I've used PrintBoss and it works well.  A couple main advantages of Mekorma and PrintBoss are additional options such as conditional electronic signature printing and ease in formatting assigning check stubs to individual GP companies, among other advantages.  If all you need to do is print a MICR check and don't require more advanced functionality, GP checks will work just fine.
