Rebuilding GP10

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi guys,

We are currently running GP2010 which is working fine. Before GP2010 we were running GP10 SP5 with SQL Server 2008 R2. We didn't upgrade all companies to GP2010 as some were no longer active, so we kept the GP10 server for read only access to old company data. This was great until the old server decided to crash. Luckily I had copies of the databases.

Now before I start rebuilding I just wanted to confirm the required steps.

1 - Install OS (Windows Server 2003)

2 - Install SQL Server 2005

3 - Install GP 10 (I think I've got SP3)

4 - Make a test company and check that it is working

5 - Upgrade GP10 to SP5

6 - Upgrade SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 r2

7 - Restore company databases and in theory I should be able to log in

Does that look right or have I missed something?

Thanks.

Eden

    Hi Eden,

You should be fine. Install the service pack before you launch GP Utilities.

What I would do is this:

copy the install media to the local hard drive

delete the SP from the upgrade folder in the install media

    copy SP5 into that folder

    Install GP

That should install GP along with service pack 5.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Hi all,

Thanks alot for the suggestions. I have backed up the Dynamics DB also so that shouldn't be a problem restoring.

Before the crash we were running on GP10SP5 with SQL 2008 R2, so all DB's are now SQL2008r2 versions.

From my understanding GP10SP5 is the only version that supports SQL 2008 R2. If I restore the DB's with SQL2008r2 before installing GP won't that cause an issue since the GP10 cd is GP10SP3 and that needs to be functional before I can upgrade to GP10SP5?

    Thanks.

    Hi all,

GPYoungGuns (still love that name :)) is correct.

You need to restore the old databases (All of them) BEFORE you install Dynamics GP. Doing it the other way is a very common error, but one you do not have to make.

    Good luck

You missed a big step.  When you install GP10 it will create the Dynamics db.  If you simply restore the company db then they will not be listed in Dynamics and the security will also be gone.  If you have a backup of Dynamics, restore that as well.  If not, Create each of the companies you need to restore (that will list them in Dynamics) and then restore the company dbs.  This last way, you will still loose the security but sa will still work and new users can be created (use totally new user IDs in GP)

I would follow this techknowledge.   It is recommended to restore the databases before installing GP.

It sounds like you have everything covered.  The only addition thing I might do is make a backup after you upgrade to GP SP5.  Since the service pack shouldn't give you any issues, if you had a solid GP SP5 backup of your company databases, you will only have to restore back one level if something happens when you upgrade to GP2010.
